WELCOME TO THE LIONS CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JULY, 2010
We’ve decided to include a monthly informal newsletter as a regular Lions Club event to keep members up to date on what’s happening with our club.
Highlights from the first meeting of our new Lions Club Year: Ably led by VP Lion Bob B. as new President Lion Ken K. and Lion Sandy K. were cruising the high seas. Secretary Lion Grover J. read thank you notes from our new scholarship recipient as well as several other donor recipients. The club received a badge from Leader Dog for our donations to that cause.
Lion Grover J. gave a short (yes, it was short!) orientation program, which was the 1st of 3 that we will have during the coming year.
Lion Steve K. gave a report on the new car show our club is sponsoring on Sat., Oct. 9, which is also the date of Great Eastern’s Fall Festival, so many people are expected to view this. We are all intrigued by this event as it is different from any fund raiser we have had in the past. Mark your calendars for this event – Steve needs many volunteers, and this is the perfect opportunity for all club members who are in town that weekend to contribute with time and service for a worthy cause.
Volunteers Needed: Many opportunities are available for your time and talents.
Fireman’s Parade in McGaheysville on 7/23/10 – Call Lion Nancy J.
Calling Committee – Call Lion Carol M.
Valley Voice (reading service for the blind) - Call Lion Trish P.
RAM (Rural Area Medical Service) – Call Lion Bob B. if you would like to go to this annual event in Southwest Va. July 21 – 24th. Many of our members have participated in the past.
Web Site:
Lion Gene H. announced that a new calendar is now on the website, which will be maintained by Lions Ken and Sandy.
Check the Bingo Schedule – are you listed?
Lion Grover is updating the membership list – On 3/31/10 our membership was 85 members.
More Info:
Lion Tamer Pat N. passed a signup sheet for bringing refreshments (sweet & salty – very informal, please) to future meetings.
Lion Barbara B. brought a birthday cake for Lion Ron, who was celebrating his 70th birthday on our meeting date. If you see him, wish him happy birthday as he might still be celebrating. Other July birthday celebrants were honored. Happy Birthday!
Lion Pat N. announced our club is sponsoring the Zone Meeting on August 17, 2010 at 6:30 at the Mountain View Fellowship Church in McGaheysville. The ½ chicken dinner is $10.00 pp. Mark your calendars – she may need volunteers for this event.
Lion Carol M. did a great job as usual as the Lion Twister with another one of her cute jokes. Lion Wayne B. won the 50/50 raffle – was it $15.00?
Next Grant’s Committee Meeting – July 14th
Next Lions Club Meeting – Social Pizza Party – July 20, 2010 – Lion Pat N. will need to know how many will be there, so callers will be calling you. Plan to make your reservations now.
Last night at bingo (Thurs., 7/8/10) about 1200 pull tabs ($1.00 each) were sold – it’s obvious there are many vacationers here willing to part with their dollars! Of course, not all that’s profit as 5 - $100 tabs and several $50 tabs were sold to happy bingo players. But it’s still good news for us – more for us to donate to those in need. Regular bingo - $1,246; Pull tabs - $283. Thanks to Lions JC, Neal, Margaret K., Dick & Jan for a big, busy night.
We welcome any feedback (negatives will be deleted!) about this newsletter – would you prefer to have it as an email or on the website? Or maybe both? Any info you would like to have in a future newsletter – contact me by phone or email. We would like to have our club activities mentioned so that all Lions are aware of events as they happen, or will be happening. There are many ways we serve the local community and we want you to know about them. We Serve is an excellent motto for the Lions Club.
